Radon
is a naturally occurring radioactive gas which
originates from the decay of uranium in rocks
and soils. It is colourless, odorless and tasteless
and can only be measured using special equipment.
When radon surfaces in the open air its quickly
diluted to harmless concentrations, but when it
enters an enclosed space, such as a house or other
building, it can become a very real heath hazard
in high concentration levels.
Radon decays to form tiny radioactive particles,
some of which remain suspended in the air and
water. When inhaled into the lungs these particles
give a radiation dose which over a period of time
can damage cells in the lung and lead to lung
cancer. The National Cancer Institute in the United
Kingdom has estimated that radon is responsible
for over 10% of all lung cancer cases diagnosed
each year in UK.
Radon concentration is measured
in becquerels per cubic meter of air (Bq/m3).
The Reference Level for long-term exposure to
radon in a house, above which the need for remedial
action should be taken is 200 Bq/m3 with an action
level of 400Bq/m3 for schools, public buildings
and working environments (determined in accordance
with RPII's
standard protocol). Based on current knowledge
it is estimated that in the UK and Ireland, for
the population as a whole, a lifetime exposure
(ie 70 yrs) to radon in the home at a Reference
Level of 200 Bq/m3 carries a risk of about 1 in
50 of contracting fatal lung cancer. This is approximately
twice the risk of death in a road accident therefore
its very important that high concentration levels
of radon gas are identified so that mitigation
work can be carried out at school, work or home
in order to reduce the health risks posed by exposure
to the gas.
